What is a Verdura® 30 retaining wall system?

This system combines Verdura® 30 plantable retaining wall blocks & Posi-Dura™ geosynthetic fabric to allow the construction of a wall (reinforced earthen buttress) from 3 to 8 feet in height. An embedment using the same blocks, bu no poured concrete foundation, is necessary. When constructing a wall, based on the Verdura® Retaining Wall Standard Design, you can place block & the reinforcement (Posi-Dura™ geosynthetic fabric) at the same time as backfill. In most cases, a simple drainage system can be used. The design & construction of your Verdura® retaining wall will vary depending upon soil type, slope, & wall dimensions. Here's a good sample project that you can use to better understand the process.

Design Factors
Examples
Uniform Building Code Class of Soil Class 4 - (SW, SP, SM, SC, GM, & GC - sand, silty sand, clayey sand, silty gravel & clayey gravel)
Wall Height*
*including embedment
8 feet
Wall Area*
*includuing embedment
50 feet long x 8 feet high = 400 square feet (s.f.)
Number of Blocks = Wall Area (length x height) / area covered by block 400 s.f. / 1.25 s.f. = 320 blocks
Slope Geometry level bottom, level top
Back Drainage 50 linear feet (as specified in Standard Design)
Posi-Dura® Reinforcement Tail Length 6.5 feet
Approximate Number of Tails = Number of Blocks / 3 320 / 3 = 106

Here's what you'll need to get started:

  • Verdura® 30 Retaining Wall Standard Design
  • Determine slope geomtry, maximum wall height & wall area
  • Obtain classification of site soils by qualified geotechnical (soils) engineer - this individual can also be retained for soil compaction testing & inspection during construction
  • Develop a site plan of your property, identifying proposed elevation & location of the Verdura® 30 retaining wall(s)
  • Select a Standard Design for your Verdura®30 retaining wall based upon your site conditions.
  • Apply for any necessary permits from your local building authority, using your site plan & Standard Design.
