Drivable Grass® Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this something I can install myself?

A: Drivable Grass Concrete Paving System is a simple do it yourself project for the homeowner. Installation is very similar to pave stones and explained in detail in our do it yourself installation brochure available wherever our Drivable Grass product is sold or via our website www.soilretention.com

Q: What type of contractor would install this product if I don’t desire to do so myself?

A: Any contractor that installs pave stones can easily install this product for you. The ground preparation is similar to pave stones.

Q: Can I mow Drivable Grass after it’s installed?

A: After installation care is similar to your regular lawn care. Water, fertilize and mow as you would the other lawn areas of your landscape. When the Drivable Grass® mats are properly backfilled the wheels of your lawn mower will ride on top of the concrete.  Irrigation can either be done by an overspray pattern or for large installations irrigation can be run under the Drivable Grass product with removed muffins allowing for riser operation. There are also now advanced underground drip systems available, contact your local landscape irrigation supplier for details.

Q: What alternative ground covers can I use in the Drivable Grass concrete paving system?

A: Along with normal lawn grass the Drivable Grass product can be filled with sand, pea gravel, colored rock and artificial grass. In low traffic areas you can also use sod over the product or experiment with alternative ground cover plants.

Q: What size and colors does the Drivable Grass product come in?

A: Drivable Grass Concrete System is produced in 2’ x 2’ squares allowing for easy installation. Currently it is only available in the buff/tan color but can be stained with any standard concrete stain prior to installation.  For large installations feel free to contact us concerning producing the Drivable Grass® mats in custom concrete colors.

Q: Can the Drivable Grass concrete paving system withstand the weight of my heavy RV?

A: Drivable Grass is constructed of 4000 PSI concrete. It was designed and tested for use as emergency vehicle access at large commercial and residential projects so can easily withstand the pressures of standard residential traffic including your heavy RV. Proper ground preparation is the key to a satisfactory project.

Q: How do I cut the Drivable Grass product to fit in my area?

A: Drivable Grass can be cut along the internal grid pattern using a cold chisel or screwdriver. For curves and precision applications you can also cut the concrete product with a standard concrete saw blade.

Q: How much aggregate base and sand is required in my installation?

A: In our do it yourself installation brochure, found wherever our Drivable Grass product is sold or on our website www.soilretention.com, you will find a chart which gives you the manufacturer recommended sub-structure depths dependent upon your intended usage and soil types.

Q: What types of grass should I use in the Drivable Grass concrete paving system?

A: Talk with your local nursery or landscape supplier for a recommended grass in your area. They will be the best source of local information concerning the best grass variant to grow in your area and withstand the desired traffic levels.

Q: What is the importance of your product being flexible?

A: The flexibility of our product allows it to be used on contour landscape designs, therefore your not limited to a flat plane as you are with concrete or pave stones. Also due to it’s flexibility you will not have an issue with a cracked drive surface like you would with concrete, asphalt or a pavestone causing a safety issue.

Q: I hear a lot about permeable paving products, what is the importance of your product being permeable?

A: Permeable paving products allow the storm water to filter through the product into the subsurface. In drought prone areas this can be very important as this keeps the storm water on your property and in your water table. Also this allows contaminants (vehicle drippings, car wash chemicals and such) to filter through the aggregates installed below the product so that they do not enter the local drain system and contaminate the local waterways and oceans.  Further grass also bio-degrades polluntants.

Q: What other benefits does Drivable Grass concrete paving system provide?

A: Since Drivable Grass provides stable structure to your landscape areas while retaining the aesthetically appealing look of a carefully landscaped area there is an expected advantage in “curb appeal” over standard concrete or asphalt surfaces.
